The walk length depends on how much discussion ensues.

The Famous and the Forgotten: 150 Years in Kitchener’s Mount Hope Cemetery

When: Saturday, May 5, 10-11:30 am

Where: Begin at the Zuber angel (across from 128 Moore Ave, Kitchener)

Walk Leader: Wayne Miedema

In Kitchener Mount Hope Cemetery, there are so many interesting stories covering 150 years of the history of Berlin/Kitchener. We will visit memorials of people related to some events one hundred years ago in 1918.

We’ll visit one woman who served in WWI as a nurse and another that played an important role in Berlin’s party to welcome publicly generated hydroelectricity to Ontario. We’ll visit another woman that dug a foundation for an addition to the former Barra Castle even though she had only one leg. We will visit two of the Triumvirate of famous and loved teachers who worked together from 1876 at what is now KCI. Then one of the oldest stones with a birth date of 1787. And then two men who have been inducted into sports halls of fame … one called the father of soccer in Canada!

This year’s tour includes six new stops – and many favourites from other years.

Note: The walk length is approximately 700m on ground that is sometimes uneven.

Downtown Kitchener is Walker’s Paradise

Rescheduled

When: Saturday, May 5, 7-8:30 pm

Where: Begin and end at Kitchener City Hall (in front of Open Sesame)

Walk Leader: James Howe

Come and see what makes downtown Kitchener a walker’s paradise. And help us determine how it could be even better.

We’ll share criteria to help you determine if you live in a walkable neighbourhood and how it could be improved.

Walk will end near Kitchener City Hall, hopefully at a pub or restaurant where we can continue the conversation.

Differently, We Are the Same

When: Saturday, May 5, 1:30-3 pm

Where: Begin at 22 Willow Street, Waterloo (Elevation Church), end in Uptown Waterloo

Walk Leaders: Fauzia Baig, Erin Tardiff and Neb Zachariah

An exploration of spiritual buildings in uptown Waterloo – we will contemplate what significance (if any) these buildings have in our community, in our lives? Do these traditional structures still have a place in modern times? What role can they play in building social capital in a community. Just as we come from different backgrounds and faiths, our walk will also include spiritual buildings representing different faiths and beliefs. We will even venture inside a few of them including Waterloo Masjid. We hope you will join us for great conversation and share in a little treat with us at our final stop.

This walk is family friendly and welcoming to all.
