Paths, People & Places: The Great Neighbourhood Hunt

We’re going on a scavenger hunt and we’d like you to join us and see! Come explore what the neighbourhood at Courtland and Kent can be.

Where industry meets community, and trails meet creeks, How will we capture how the history of Schneiders’ speaks?

On this Jane’s Walk there is much to see including some of the LRT!

The scavenger hunt begins at 10:30am on Saturday, May 4th in the parking lot of Short Finger Brewing Co. at 20 Hurst Avenue.

The trek from Traynor-Vanier to Food Basics

When: Sunday, May 5, 9-10:30 a.m.

Where: Begin and end at the hole in the fence behind 301 Traynor

Walk Leader: James Howe

We will make the trek from the Traynor-Vanier neighbourhood to get groceries from the Food Basics on Fairway Road and back. On the way there, we will take the official long route and see the many services that are just on other side of the LRT tracks that are cut off by two fences. We will use the unofficial crossing to return.

This walk will focus on the need for a safe crossing that returns much needed walkability to this neighbourhood, the history of advocating for that crossing and the likelihood that if will be built in 2019. To make the trip realistic, please plan to buy some groceries at the store. They could be for your personal use or the walk leader will arrange to donate them to the food bank. Here’s a suggested shopping list:

  • 2 or 5 litres of milk (to be given directly to T-V residents)
  • peanut butter in a medium or large jar
  • bag of rice
  • can of chick peas
  • box of granola bars

If driving, please find street parking. Don’t use the apartment’s parking.

Greenhouse Photowalk

When: Monday, May 6, 1-2 p.m.

Where: Begin and end at Colour Paradise Greenhouses (1209 Bleams Road, Mannheim)

Walk Leader: Abbi Belle

Join Abbi Belle of Tangent Studios for a very special photowalk through Colour Paradise Greenhouses in Mannheim, one kilometre west of the Sunrise Centre. We will be discussing basic photography fundamentals like the Rule of Thirds, lighting techniques, depth of focus, working with colours, and more.

This walking workshop is open to anyone, so get your favourite camera (including your phone) and let’s have some fun!

Wee Little Wander for Well-being

When: Saturday, May 4, 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.

Where: Begin at and end at Extend-A-Family Waterloo Region (91 Moore Ave, Kitchener)

Walk Leader: Kate Pearce

Families, friends, and little ones are invited to join us for a short walk through the Mount Hope side of the MHBPNA neighbourhood to see and learn about some of the resources that support the well-being of our families and children. We will visit some Little Libraries, the Spur Line Trail, some local parks, and return to EAFWR.

Claudette’s Wonderful World of the KW Library Of Things

Claudette started volunteering with KW Library of Things (KWLOT) from its opening in February 2018. Now in a paid position as Librarian (thanks to an Ontario Trillium Foundation grant), Claudette is excited to share her experience and insights. “Who says tools have to be boring, when they can be fun?”, says Claudette, who will guide you on a short and accessible walk of the area around KWLOT, talking about what the Library is and what it means in her life. Some fun surprises along the way, and light refreshments right after the tour.
